How are patient referrals handled?

Referrals to and from Parish nurses may be arranged through a documentation process that is initiated by the Parish nurse. They may come from any source. There is no requirement to be part of a particular faith community in order to receive care…the service that parish nurses provide is available to all, subject to the nurse’s time availability. ..

Can my church have a parish nurse?

Any church can have a Parish nurse, or several churches together. There are Parish nurses attached to churches of nearly every Christian denomination. Some are also employed by Christian organisations. They are part of a world wide movement of Faith Community Nursing. Parish Nursing Ministries UK can send an initial enquiries pack to churches and nurses that are interested. We can follow that up by arranging for a representative to visit your local area and explain more, for a small fee, but no strings attached!  Later on in the process of starting up we can also provide you with useful documents like job descriptions, and sample budgets.

If I am no longer registered as a nurse can I be a Parish nurse?

No, every Parish nurse must be currently registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. (NMC) But if you have recently retired or are taking a break from other nursing employment, the hours you do as a Parish nurse count for practice hours, and we provide continuing professional development  (CPD) and help with revalidation requirements, so that you can retain your registration with the NMC.  If you have given up your registration you will either need to do a back to nursing course, or you could become a Health care assistant to the Parish Nurse who leads the team in your church.
